 Simply beautiful baby quilt Minimize

This baby quilt is simple to create and yet looks beautiful. This quilt is tied instead of quilted so doesn't require machine quilting afterwards.

Finished size is approximately 122cm by 103cm.

You will need:
8 fat quarters of 100% cotton fabric (This will need to be prewashed in warm water before using)
130 cm of backing fabric (100% cotton or a very good quality Flannelette)
35cm of fabric for binding
120cm by 130cm Batting
Matching sewing thread

Thread to tie the quilt (I used embroidery cotton Perle 5)
A rotary cutter and cutting mat
A quilting ruler

Instructions
1. Prewash and iron fabric.

2. Using the measurements on the ruler and cutting mat to help you, cut the fabric into 4 1/2 inch strips. Then cut the strips into 4 1/2 inch squares. Cutting these accurately will make the quilt easier to sew together.

3. You should have 128 squares, you will only need 120 squares. Arrange the squares in rows of 10 across and make 12 rows. Try to make sure that not too many of the same fabric are near each other.

4. When you are happy with the arrangement of the squares, begin to sew the squares together. Use a 1/4 inch seam and sew the squares into rows. Press the seams open.

5. Begin to sew the rows together, matching the seams of the previous row with the new row if possible and keeping the seams open. Press the seams just sewn open.

6. Sandwich the backing fabric (right side down), then the batting, and then the quilt top (right side up) together.

7. Make sure that all of the layers are smooth and flat. Begin pinning all 3 layers together  (I use safety pins) from the centre outwards.

8. Beginning at the centre, tie the layers together.

To tie the layers:
Thread the needle with a single thread of Perle cotton. Push the needle through the top in the corner of a square, and down through all of the layers, leaving a 3 inch 'tail' on the top of the quilt. Catch a little of the backing fabric, and then come back up through all of the layers in the corner of the opposite square.

Cut the thread leaving about a 3 inch tail. Tie the 2 ends of the thread together using a left over right, then right over left knot. Make a firm knot without drawing the fabric up too tightly.

9. Cut binding into 2 1/2 inch strips. Sew together to form continuous binding (one long strip).

10. Attach the binding to the quilt top using mitred corners (click here to learn more about mitred corners). Fold the binding over and hand stitch the binding to the back of the quilt.

11. Enjoy!

We have started a tradition in our family of getting together and making a quilt when there is a baby due. Most family members have not done a lot of sewing and yet their quilts have created special memories and are much loved.
